The works of Belarus authoress Svetlana Alexievich with her moral courage bring strong emotional impact to readers. The authoress' s works are rich in profound thoughts and emotional strength. This is not only an inheritance of the spiritual tradition of Russian intellectuals, but also an echo to the discourse of the intellectuals of the contemporary world, a reflection to Utopia ideology, a criticism to totalitarianism, as well as a call to human rational spirit. This article will use the way of close reading to analyze the moral strength of emotion in the authoress' s works, explore the dual role of Russian intellectuals via historical criticism method, and examine and weigh with political concepts the authoress' s critical reflection to totalitarianism. Calamity narrative surfaces the voice of the authoress which on the one hand defends human dignity and on the other hand reflects on human rational misunderstanding. Russian intellectuals' affection for salvation gestated humanism passion and their infatuation for Utopia led to the emergence of totalitarianism. With human faced with subsistence plight in the contemporary era, the reflection toward calamity from the authoress especially bears realistic meaning.
